G/Cpt WITORZENC Stefan

Born on 15 January 1908 at Lida. After the final certificate exams he joined the Stefan Batory Unversity at Wilno. He discontinued his education, graduated from the Air Force Reserve Cadet Officers School in Deblin, and the the Air Force Cadet officers School. In 1932 he was promoted to pilot officer and assigned to 3 Air Wing in Poznan. In 1935, already in the rank of flying officer, he was posted as an instructor to the Advanced Flying Training School at Grudziadz (at the beginning of 1939 the school was transferred to Ulez.). In September 1939 he defended the region of Deblin within an instructors flight. He got to France via Romania, and then to Great Britain. After short conversion training, on 6 August 1940 he was assigned to No. 501 RAF Fighter Squadron. He fought within it in the Battle of Britain. On 15 August 1940 he shot down two Ju 87 aircraft. On 18 August 1940 over Whitstable he shot down a German ace from 5. Staffel of JG 51hptm. Horst Jacob Tietzen (27 kills). On 2 September 1940 he shot down a Ju 88, and on 11 September he participated in destruction of a Do 215 (1/2 of a kill). On 22 November 1940 he was transferred to No. 306 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Torun, in which he commanded a flight. On 21 December 1940 he was awarded Silver Cross of Virtuti Militari War Order No. 08992. On 14 May 1941 he was assigned to No. 302 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Poznan to the post of a flight commander. From 27 May until 24 November 1941 he commanded the squadron. On 4 September 1941 he shot down a
Bf 109, and on 30 October 1941 he was awarded Cross of Valour. On 24 November 1941 he became the commander of 2 (Polish) Fighter Wing. He commanded it until 25 September 1942. On 1 June 1942 he was decorated with Distinguished Flying Cross. From 25 November 1942 he was a liaison officer to 11 RAF Fighter Group, and from 24 April 1944 he was the chief instructor at 61 OTU. On 7 January 1945 he took over the command of (Polish) Elementary Flying Training School No. 25 at Hucknall. From 1 June 1945 until 3 July 1947 he commanded 131 Fighter Wing. He was a representative of air force in the Virtuti Militari War Order Committee. He returned to Poland in 1948. In 1957 he was again called up for military
service; he was, among others, the commandant of the Air Training Centre at Modlin. He lived in Warsaw. In 1992 he became the President of the Polish Air Force Association. Posthumously decorated with Commander s Cross of the Polands Restitution Order.
