S/Ldr SZCZESNY Henryk

Born on 27 March 1909 at Ruszkowo, present Mazovia province. He graduated from a primary and a secondary school in Pultusk. In 1931, having passed the final certificate exams, after general training and practice in an infantry regiment, he joined the Air Force Cadet Officers School at Deblin. He was promoted to pilot officer in 1933, and assigned to 5 Air Wing in Lida. Then he was posted to the Air Force Officers Training Centre in Deblin for flying training. After the course he was flying in 3 Air Wing in Poznan. As an outstanding pilot he was transferred in 1937 to the Air Force Cadet Officers School at Deblin as an instructor and lecturer for gunnery theory. In September 1939 he fought in defence of Deblin. On 14 and 15September 1939, defending the Wielick airfield in a PZLP-11g Kobuz he shot down one He 111 each day (according to J. Cynk that was only one He 111, on 15 September 1939). He himself was wounded. He reached France via Romania and Malta. Then he went to Great Britain. After conversion training at 5 OTU Aston Down, he was assigned to No. 74 RAF Fighter Squadron at Hornchurch (on 6 August 1940). On 13 August 1940 he shot down a Do 17, and on 11 September 1940 a Bf 109. On 5 October 1940 he shared in destruction of a Do 17 (1/3 of a kill). On 1 and 5 December 1940 he shot
down a Bf 109. On 12 December 1940 he was posted to No. 257 RAF Fighter Squadron at North Weald, from where he moved to No. 302 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Poznan (on 19 December 1940). On 1 February 1941 he was
decorated with Cross of Valour and a bar. On 24 February 1941 he wasposted to the newly formed No. 317 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Wilno at Acklington. On 1 April 1941 he was awarded a second bar to Cross of Valour. On 18 August 1941 he became the commander of No. 317 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Wilno (he commanded it till 17
March 1942). On 19 July 1941 he shot down a Bf 109. On 15 September 1941 he was decorated with Silver Cross of Virtuti Militari War Order No. 09116, and on 30 October 1941 with Distinguished Flying Cross. On 7 March 1942 he became a liaison officer to 10 Fighter Group HQ, and on 12 May 1942 to 12 Fighter Group. On 28 December 1942 he was appointed as a deputy commander flying in 1 (Polish) Fighter Wing. On 4 April 1943 he led the aircraft escorting American bombers against Renault factory near Paris. On the way back he got engaged in combat with two Fw 190s. He shot down one
and collided with another one. He spent the rest of the war in the Stalag Luft III POW camp in Zagan. After release from captivity he returned to Great Britain, and again became a liaison officer to 12 Fighter Group HQ. In 1946 he completed an accountancy and administration course. He continued to serve in RAF until 27 March 1965. He often visited Poland. He participated, among others: in the Meeting of Air Generations in 1988, in celebrations of 60th Anniversary of 1st promotion in the School of Eaglets, and in the I Worldwide Rally of Polish Airmen in 1992. He was a man of great energy and sense of humour, and we shall keep such picture of him in our minds forever. He died on 25 July 1996 in London.
