| S/Ldr POPLAWSKI Jerzy
Born on 1 October 1919 in Model, near Gostyn. Having passed the final
certificate exams, he completed the Divisional Course for Reserve Cadet
Officers at 44 Infantry Regiment in Rowny (he remained there till 21
September 1937). At the beginning of 1938 he started studies at the
Air Force Cadet Officers School in Deblin. The outbreak of WW II made
him
discontinue his education; he was promoted in war conditions on 12
September 1939 (13th promotion) with seniority from 1 September 1939.
He reached Marseilles via Romania and Beirut; however, he soon decided
to leave for Great Britain. He got to Great Britain on 26 January 1940and
was trained at 5 OTU in Aston Down. On 10 September 1940 he was attached
to No. 111 RAF Fighter Squadron. From 26 September 1940 he was serving
in No. 229 RAF Fighter Squadron. In both of these squadrons he participated
in the Battle of Britain. On 6 November 1940 he was wounded during
crash landing in a Hurricane No. P 3898, at Streatley airport. On 16
March 1941 he was assigned to No. 308 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City
of Krakow, which was based at Baginton. In that squadron he shot down
a Bf 109 aircraft on: 4, 16, 21 and 27 September, and 13 October 1941
each day one kill. On 30 October 1941 he was decorated with Cross of
Valour, and a bar to it on 19 February 1942. On 4 March 1942 he was
decorated with Silver Cross of Virtuti
Militari War Order No. 09340. On 30 April 1942 he was appointed as
the commander No. 308 Squadron. On 1 September 1942 he became an instructor
at 58 OTU. On 16 April 1943 he was appointed as the commander of No.
315 (Polish) Fighter Squadron City of Deblin. On 20 October 1943 he
was decorated with a third bar to Cross of Valour. Hecommanded
No. 315 Squadron till 15 February 1944, and then he was transferred
to the Polish Air Force Inspectorate. Between 2 April and 28 November
1944 he was studying at the Air Academy. Having graduated from it he
became a liaison officer to 11 RAF Fighter Group. In February 1947
he retired from the air force, and left for Argentina, where he is
living till present.
