S/Ldr KRASNODEBSKI Zdzislaw

Born on 10 July 1904 in Wola Osowinska, Lukow district. In 1925 he passedthe final certificate exams in the Cadets Corps No.1 in Lvov.He joined the Officers Air School in Grudziadz in the same year. On 15 August 1928 he was promoted to pilot officer. He was posted to 1 Air Wing in Warsaw as an observer, and there he underwent flying training. In 1930 he underwent an advanced flying training course in 2 Air Wing inKrakow. He was flying in fighter sorties of 1 Air Wing. On 13 November1935 he became the commander of 111 Fighter Flight. In 1938 he was decorated with Silver Cross of Merit. In September 1939 he commanded III/1 Fighter Squadron, which was a part of the Pursnit Brigade. Together with F/O Arsen
Cebrzynski and P/O Miroslaw Feric he shot down a Bf 109 aircraft. He moved to France, where he was the leader of a flight which was a part of Groupe de Chasse I/55. At the end of June he went to Great Britain. There he was posted to air training. On 2 August 1940 he became the first Polish commander of No. 303 (Polish) Fighter Squadron Tadeusz Kosciuszko (the commander from RAF was S/Ldr Ronald Kellet). He fought in this squadron in the Battle of Britain. On 6 September 1940 he was shot down in air combat. He baled out from his Hurricane P 3974 aircraft, however, he was heavily burnt. In the Queen Victoria Hospital in the East Grinstead he underwent a plastic surgery carried out by a famous surgeon Archie McIndoe. Therefore, Zdzislaw Krasnodebski became a member of the Guinea Pig Club. On 18 September 1940 he was decorated with Silver Cross of Virtuti Militari War Order No. 08817. He returned to service on 2 June 1941,
but soon he was posted to the Polish Military Mission in Canada. From 15 March 1942 he was receiving training in the USAAF Fighter Command. On 23 March 1943 he returned to Great Britain, on 1 April 1943 he became the commander of the RAF Station at Heston. On 15 October 1943 he became the commander of 131 Airfield, and he commanded it till
17 February 1944. On 25 February 1944 he was assigned to the General Staff and was an air representative in special units. On 1 January 1945 he was posted to the Air Academy. After graduating from it, on 15 October 1945 he was appointed as the commandant of the RAF Station Newton. He remained at that post untill he retired. On 31 October 1947 he was decorated with Cross of Valour. After demobilization he left for Canada.

He died on 3 August 1980 in Toronto.
